This is one of our many SAQCC-Fire Accredited training courses for individuals interested in registering as a Fire Detection and Alarm System Designer.
PREREQUISITE FOR REGISTRATION
- You must have a minimum of one year's previous working experience in the Fire Detection and Alarm System Industry
- N3 / Grade 12 Maths and Science
- Certificate of training for the Fire Detection and Alarm System National Standard SANS 10139 (or equivalent)
- Certificate of training for the Fire Detection and Alarm System National Standard SANS 246 (or equivalent)
- Highly recommend attending the National Standard SANS 369 training course (or equivalent)
- Access to CAD software program, at least 2007 version, capable of editing DWG AutoCAD drawing files
- If you have already completed these courses, please ensure that your results & proof of competency are uploaded to your online profile prior to enrolling.
THE DESIGN COURSE COVERS THE FOLLOWING:
Module 1: Understanding the requirements and inter-relationship of the Building Regulations, the Building Code and Local By Laws
- An understanding of the Building Regulations
- An understanding of the Building Code of Practice
- An understanding of local By Laws
- An understanding of the South African Electrical wiring code SANS 10142
Module 2: The Responsibilities and liabilities of the designer
- The responsibilities of the designer
- Interfacing with other building services
- The liabilities of the designer
- Interface with insurers and the fire department
Module 3: The National Standards in place to be followed in the design of fire detection systems
- The description and explanation of all the listed SANS standards for fire detection systems
- Brief review of the important factors of these standards
Module 4: The stakeholders interview
- Determining the requirements of the Fire Detection and Alarm System
- Determine the type and usage of the building
- Determining evacuation procedures
- Determine interlock and interface requirements and functions
- Decide on the system category to be used
- Determining any special customer requirements
- Info from rational fire design / risk assessments
- Insurance requirements
Module 5: Design of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems for industrial applications
- Finding international standards to follow
- Intrinsically safe environments
- Special detection devices for Industrial applications
- Use of manufacturer’s installation instructions

Module 6: Production and requirements of the conceptual design (base line document)
- Confirmation of standard to be used

Module 7: Detailed design structure
- Using a standard system design format
